Company Overview

Since 1855, Elizabethtown Gas has provided affordable natural gas efficiently to more than 276,000 residential, business, and industrial natural gas customers in New Jersey.  Elizabethtown Gas currently serves parts of Union, Middlesex, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Morris, and Mercer counties, and is always looking for ways to expand.  ETG's parent company, AGL Resources, is the nation's preeminent distributors of natural gas. Elizabethtown Gas was originally founded to fuel the 300 gas lights lining the streets of the city now known as Elizabeth, NJ.  In the first century of its' founding, ETG used coal to manufacture the gas that was delivered throughout their territories.

Elizabethtown Gas employs a focuses differentiation business strategy by providing an alternative energy to oil in the form a natural gas to consumers in a geographically focused area. As an energy distributor they are medium in all of the five forces except in the threat of substitutes which is weak because regardless of the form or supplier of energy a customer chooses, the energy will still have to be delivered but ETG.

The value chain for natural gas stretches across the entire industry rather than just the individual companies. From the time the gas is extracted from the earth it will pass through several companies all of whom perform different tasks in the value chain until it reaches the end consumer. ETG operates in the third and final part of this chain called the downstream. The downstream consist of the distribution companies that deliver and market directly to those end customers.
